Newly Built Jap Airdrome Smashed by Allied Bombing
Allied bombers from Solomon Islands airfields struck Lakunai airdrome at Rabaul with 52 tons of bombs on Sunday, starting five large fires. No aerial resistance was met, and reconnaissance showed Rabaul's air strength was unusually low, with fewer than 100 planes counted. Ships in the harbor were also reduced in number, and Japanese activity at the base appeared to wane.
