President Roosevelt vetoed the 2.315 billion tax bill, labeling it ineffective and skewed to special interests. He urged Congress to simplify tax laws, warned of taxable complexity, and discussed revenue shortfalls and social security implications while opposing the bill’s provisions and renegotiation terms.
The German news agency DNB said Allied bombers hit targets in southern Germany and the Danube and Alps regions at noon in a coordinated attack. London reports the first coordinated air strike against Germany from bases in the United Kingdom and Italy, with raids on aircraft factories and other sites. U S Army headquarters announced details.
Lieutenant-Commander Charles H. Conley Jr of Frederick County is among the first Americans to land on Kwajalein atoll, pre war Japanese territory. In a letter to his parents he describes the bombardment, ruins, and stiff Japanese resistance, praising Marines and medical corpsmen. He notes observing the Jap medical setup and hints at strong measures to end the war.
A caveat to the will of the late Charles A. Staley has been filed in the Orphans Court by his brother Grayson H. Staley of Baltimore. He asks the court to annul the probate order. The petition seeks revocation of letters testamentiary granted to Irving E. Staley. Estate valued around 70000. Grounds include alleged lack of signing and undue influence. The purported will leaves the widow for life and distributes residue to four beneficiaries, with specific bequests. Three properties sold in January brought about 50000.

A U S Weather Bureau balloon released at Pittsburgh on February 7 at 11 30 pm landed Saturday afternoon near Brunswick at Fielderen Manor Farm owned by John R Lloyd. The craft descended about two o'clock with a 2 mile burst height. The parachute and radio gear will be sent back to the Weather Bureau. Lloyd notes a few similar landings nearby and links this to past enemy parachute scares.
London reports RAF Mosquito bombers struck targets in western Germany last night to sustain the Allied air offensive. A US fleet of about 2,000 heavy bombers and fighters continued missions yesterday, blasting two Nazi aircraft factories at Brunswick and at least six key airfields in Germany.
Shenandoah Pa Feb 22 The nation’s hard coal production was cut an estimated 16 percent as 8 000 miners walked out calling it a holiday over the dismissal of one man. The strike affects wartime fuel supplies and prices could rise as mines idle across regions. The action follows tensions between miners and management escalating in recent days.
Secretary of the Navy Knox announced 92 Japanese vessels were destroyed in three weeks while warning against undue optimism about an early Pacific victory. He cited losses of two American submarines and noted notable Japanese ships sunk or damaged as he urged peak production and vigilance. Forrestal echoed the production warning after visiting Pacific bases.

German air raiders struck London early today dropping bombs at several points in the capital area. The assault did not reach the intensity of Friday and Sunday's incendiary attacks which caused wide spread damage.
A censorship rule restricts posting overseas addresses of service members. The law also bans publication of addresses for those in service within the country, with 38 states enforcing the policy.

Berlin had used gold resources to keep supply lines open as Axis gold moved into neutral markets in Turkey Switzerland Spain and Portugal.
An unstamped envelope with about $120 worth of Wells Tire and Vulcanizing Shop checks was mailed to Police Headquarters. Chief Fred Straley said no clue exists as to the sender. The robber likely discarded the checks after theft from 534 North Market Street last Monday night. The absence of all loot remains possible and the investigation continues.
Neuman P. Dudrow, once of this city and now assistant superintendent in charge of pipeline construction for the Panama Canal Zone U.S. Engineers at Albrook Field, is spending part of a 36 day leave in Frederick with his wife and two children, Harry and Diane. The daughter was born in the Canal Zone and this is her first visit to Frederick. The family last visited four years ago. Dudrow left for Panama in March 1940 and hopes to return there after his leave, noting many local men in Panama who have since joined the armed services.
Moscow on February 22 reports a War Department battle film will be shown in the city tomorrow to mark the Red Army's founding anniversary. The Soviet press carried the notice highlighting this display in Moscow as part of commemorations.
