Resident protests city zoning sign delays in Frederick
Frederick resident Edward Hazlett told Mayor Jim Grimes and aldermen of eight months of frustration with the zoning office over a large Interfaith Housing of Western Maryland sign. He said the sign was removed after calls, reappeared in December 1998, and grew to over 20 feet. Hazlett sought action, noting unreturned calls and a lack of staff to handle the case. The city directed enforcement to remove the signs, but only one was removed. Grimes and Alderman Baldi urged staff to follow through and improve communication.

Humane Society opposes planned deer slaughter near Brookside Garden
Humane Society officials challenged the Washington area deer cull planned next week at Brookside Garden and Nature Center. They urged nonlethal steps such as herding, higher fences, wider cattle guards, and relocation, arguing the slaughter is an erosion of long term management and not justified for 15 to 20 deer feeding in the 50 acre park.
