President Roosevelt threatens a special Senate session if Panama Canal and Cuban reciprocity treaties stall. Quay to Morgan filibuster ties vote on statehood to canal deal, while border events unfold in Wilkesbarre and Porto Cabello.
A Lackawanna express cut through a crowded Clifton avenue trolley near Newark New Jersey leaving eight schoolchildren dead and many injured. Motorman Peter Brady and the engineer were gravely hurt as icy rails and crowded car spiked a fatal crash near the high school. Rescue crews, police, and bystanders worked quickly to transport the injured to hospitals and gather the dead for the morgue.
Professor Woll from the University of Wisconsin reports results from a thorough investigation of milking methods. Emphasis is placed on stripping and manipulating udders to maximize milk flow and sustain production through lactation, with development of dairy cattle traits in dam and offspring. The university notes average milk production increased by a percentage in twenty cows, with fat yield rising accordingly.
The anthracite coal strike commission met in Washington to begin formulating conclusions and preparing their report. All members attended a secret session to discuss preliminary details and procedures. Sessions are expected to continue for some time with no outline of the award yet.
Harrisburg hosts the first meeting of the National League of Independent Baseball Clubs. From Pennsylvania Delaware New Jersey New York and Washington DC over 230 teams represented. Mc Rhone of Williamsport elected president and Jesse FrySinger of Harrisburg secretary treasurer. No initiation fee, all prominent local teams invited, forfeit posted to enforce rules. The House approved a naval appropriation bill after a long session with many amendments. A key move authorized the Navy Secretary to purchase or contract for submarine torpedo boats, with a $500000 allocation. The bill funds three new battleships one armored cruiser two steel training ships and a wooden brig for training, and strips out construction by contract for ships.
President John Mitchell of the United Mine Workers declines $4000 in bookings for the Chautauqua circuit saying engagements may clash with mine workers’ efforts. He cancelled 21 nights at $200 each, including appearances at Chantauqua and Winona, while Roosevelt received an invitation to Valley Forge for the 125th anniversary departure of Washington from Valley Forge.
Frederick L. Baker a Detroit home, long in Lancaster jewelry firm employ, was arrested in New York on a grand larceny charge. Police say he left with 1500 dollars in cash and 18,000 dollars worth of stock, was found with 1400 dollars and all jewelry, and consuls arranged return to Lancaster. Baker to face questions on loss and flight.
Pennsylvania faced record cold with readings near zero and subzero lows in spots, while Philadelphia warmed to 14 degrees. Ithaca reported sixteen new typhoid cases, with Cornell students largely staying away. few discharged, and no campus-closing plans.
