Gambling revival fuels Maryland slot machine push

In Maryland a renewed push for legalized gambling surfaces as Gov. Glendening nears end of term. A constitutional amendment proposal would allow slot machines at four locations including two race tracks, with state revenues earmarked for schools and libraries. New Market HDC ARC see membership shakeup and delays

Two Historic District Commission and Architectural Review Commission members resigned in the last two months with a new member joining on Wednesday. The board, short of a quorum, canceled Tuesday’s meeting and reconvened Friday. Edwin Henley and a new term for Jim Higgs were approved by the mayor, joining John DeNoma, Jack White, and Clayton Magee. The Perry housing case highlighted planning delays and variances, including a red-brick facade requirement.

Alcohol lecture set for Tuesday by Dr Tommasello

Dr Anthony Tommasello will headline a Frederick County Underage Drinking Prevention Task Force meeting at 1 30 p m Tuesday in the Frederick Camp Health Department auditorium The talk titled The Pharmacological Effects of Alcohol Heroin and Ecstasy covers risks of mixing alcohol with street drugs Tommasello is a pharmacist and associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy He founded the Office of Substance Abuse Studies in 1985 and has worked in addictions since 1973 with degrees in pharmacology epidemiology and policy sciences He leads addiction services and has created educational programs used as national models He pursues research on homeless substance abusers with HIV end of life AIDS care tobacco prevention and policy making for impaired health professionals He has numerous medical journal publications
