Babysitter Burned in New Market Kitchen Fire

A 14 year old babysitter was burned Monday in a kitchen fire at a home near New Market. She suffered burns to her hands after placing a burning pan of grease in a sink. State Police helicopter transported her to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington. The fire at 6570 Nyasa Bend caused about $4,500 in property loss.

Motorcyclist Hurt On Mill Road After Guardrail Crash

A motorcyclist identified as Robert V. Nicholls was seriously injured Monday on Mill Road near Double Tree. He lost control of a 1999 Suzuki GSX on a curve, veered off the road, and struck a guardrail, was thrown over an embankment, and flown by helicopter to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore for treatment.

Thurmont man charged in theft from truck and tools

Thurmont police say David L. Andrew 45 of East Main Street was charged with theft of a chain saw over 500 dollars and being on a motor vehicle with intent to commit theft after an alert owner reported a man leaving his truck with a power saw. A second man reported a reciprocating saw taken from a toolbox and police, after a search warrant, recovered the tools. Andrew was released after a district court appearance.

Baltimore police face fewer complaints despite tougher tactics

The Baltimore Sun reports complaints about police use of force fell from 407 in 1999 to 390 in 2000 amid heavy officer deployment and new targeting of criminals. One resident said the city should increase stop and frisk on the East Side, while residents complain about where officers concentrate and the impact on youths awaiting trial.
