Frigid arctic air grips area on frigid Friday morning

Cold snap drenched the region with near zero readings across multiple towns. Myersville logged two degrees, Emmitsburg three, Westminster 1 minus, Braddock Heights minus one, and Sheperdstown zero as the Baltimore area felt the chill. A North American high pressure system from Canada drove the arctic air, with BWI at nine degrees and downtown Baltimore at ten. Forecasters warned of teens tonight and a wind chill near minus twenty. Gas stations saw big jump-start business while police advised motorists to warm engines and keep tanks full to avoid frozen lines.

In Chillicothe Ohio President Clinton told a town meeting he would not raise taxes unless spending cuts are implemented. He argued four year plans balance cuts with revenue gains and noted increases in Head Start loans retraining despite defense cuts. He cited opposition to lotteries and a value added tax.

City OKs plan for Broadway Street Apartments for seniors

Mayor Paul Gordon and the Frederick Board of Aldermen approved on Thursday a proposal for the Broadway Street Apartments an affordable housing project for senior citizens developed by the Western Maryland Interfaith Housing Development Corp. Eighteen to 24 one bedroom units are planned with funding largely from state and federal governments. Construction is not yet started but completion is slated for summer 1994. The board also approved a mutual aid agreement between the Frederick City Police Department and the Fort Detrick Police Department to permit rapid police response and cross use of equipment and services. the arrangement has been in the works since fall and aims to bolster emergency backup for the military base.

NationsBank to buy MNC in $1.36 billion deal

NationsBank Corp will move to exercise its option to acquire Maryland's MNC Financial Inc for 1.36 billion dollars. The merger would create a major Maryland Virginia and DC franchise with MNC assets of 16.7 billion and about 250 offices. Frank Bramble of MNC called the progress in real estate issues a major step forward.
