The Frederick County Board of Education approved a proposed 77.5 million operating budget and middle school reorganization plan with 43.75 million from local revenues. A public hearing is set for April 10 as the proposal moves to county commissioners for final approval.
Frederick Memorial Hospital will lose only 12 beds by November 1 under the Hospital Capacity Plan but a spokesman predicted little impact locally. Scott Grove said the hospital operates near full capacity with 126 beds used of 154 medical surgical beds, plus 10 for same day surgery and 10 in a cancer program. He contends the legislative decision won’t affect them.
Frederick County volunteers study daytime staffing as leaders push paid personnel within two years. President Charles E. Smith cites day coverage gaps due to workers away from town and current response delays. He notes near future paid ambulances rather than firefighters, with growth in Green Valley driving the need.
James and Janice Caniford hope for relief after Sunday's Laotian search at a crash site tied to their son Senior Master Sgt. James Kenneth Caniford. The AC 130 crewman, 24, was killed when his plane was struck by a SAM on March 29, 1972. An American team will conduct a 10 to 15 day search near the Thai Laos border, the second authorized in Laos and third in Indochina. A congressional delegation had sought permission for further work as Vietnamese officials indicated possible remains or survivors in remote areas.
