Conservation buffers reap value from old farming practice
Conservation buffers, once used to curb 1930s soil erosion, are being reconsidered as a practical response to today’s farming challenges. The strips along waterways, fence rows, and streambanks protect soil, intercept runoff, reduce wind damage, and lessen odors, with programs offering planning and financial support. Local offices of Catoctin and Frederick Soil Conservation Districts provide help and contacts.

Spring Fertilizer and Weed Control For Pastures
Spring time in agriculture emphasizes early green up from timely nitrogen fertilization for pastures with under 25 percent legumes. Apply 400 pounds per acre of 10-10-10 or equivalent soon, and use broadleaf herbicides as temperatures rise. Avoid soil compaction by delaying work on wet fields and wait for dry conditions to protect soil and roots. The Central Maryland Antique Tractor Club hosted its annual banquet with donations to 4-H and FFA funds and scholarship programs.
