Hughes taps Somerset County for new prison

Gov Harry Hughes urged Somerset County as the site for a 1500 inmate state prison to be built on a 603 acre farm north of Princess Anne. Temporary quarters for 840 inmates were not planned at this site. The plan includes double celled housing and job training for locals, with no timetable for final site decisions.

Maryland lawmakers split on auto emissions pact terms

Legislative leaders reject a joint plan but accept the need for an emissions inspection program. They fault the Systems Control contract which would fund and operate the stations, arguing the deal limits recourse for cost changes. A Board of Public Works vote on Friday will decide the contract amid debates over possible private garage inspections. Maryland must start the inspections to meet federal requirements or risk aid loss and industry bans.
