AFL Chief Attacks Labor Draft as War Morale Ruiner
Washington, Feb. 16. AFL President William Green warned the Senate Military Committee that a civilian labor draft would wreck war workers morale and destabilize millions of American families. The bill, urged by President Roosevelt, would compel labor to work for private industry profits. R. J. Gray of the Building and Construction Trades Department charged government agencies with bungling and breach of faith in labor relations and urged one agency to oversee all labor matters. Green clashed with Senator Austin over compulsion in the law, while the bill would allow voluntary work in critical areas and punish noncompliance with six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Green argued wage stabilization, not living costs, causes strikes.
