Two Munitions Ships and Large Brooklyn Pier Burn
Fire on the Brooklyn waterfront destroyed the steamers Boston Castle and Pacific and a 900 foot pier at the New York Dock company. The Pallazia was damaged and about twenty five scows and lighters burned. Estimated loss over 3 million dollars. Fire suspected incendiary due to wartime munitions loading for Russia. Police later said most workers were accounted for. Firemen fought the blaze as crews and families leaped to safety.

Huntington West Virginia February 17 Mrs Rose Wood a young married woman was shot and killed on a crowded Huntington Ashland interurban car by Mrs Leonard Defoe who said Wood had alienated her husband’s affections. Defoe boarded in West Huntington and fired from her muff striking Wood in the head before surrendering to police.
