Rep Engel criticized Army plans to buy 161 172 custom built chairs for officers saying the Army would have paid $26 each instead of $945, a potential waste of $2 567 000. He cited four pages of complex specs, bids from 320 to 33, and a cheaper $12 75 chair failing to meet specs. The Army later adopted two chair types at an average $9 45.

Of 850,000 targeted prefab houses, only about 74,000 were produced during a peak period, with production hampered by shortages, high material costs, weak factory volume, and reliance on dealer-builders.

White House Roof Garden Proposal Sparks Debate
NEA correspondent Peter Edson reports Harald R. Sleeper of New York proposes a roof garden atop the White House for private relaxation, sparking debate over privacy, heat, access, and the building’s historic design. He envisions a clublike space with a dance floor, stock ticker, and lounges, while critics warn it would fail heatwise and intrude on official function. The piece critiques the modern White House as a crowded, multi-office residence, arguing privacy for the First Family is already limited and should not extend to a roof garden.
