Public Assistance Cases Closed in Washington County
Twenty five general public assistance cases, out of 76, have been closed since County Commissioners cut welfare funds from 26,377.50 to 10,996.77. State welfare director J. Milton Patterson said the cuts were not due to recipients’ lack of need but money limits. New eligibility rules bar assistance for those with nonreceiving relatives or cash incomes over 10 dollars monthly, and prohibit aid in units already receiving other public aid, with exceptions as funds allow. Patterson cited a county case analysis showing all cases are thoroughly investigated before any aid decisions.
