Maryland launches free cancer screening for poor women
A Maryland five year program aims to reach 12 000 women annually with free or low cost mammography and Pap tests to reduce the high death rate from breast and cervical cancer among the poor. The plan uses a 15 million dollar federal grant plus 5 million state matching funds to extend screening to about 80 000 women in the gray area lacking Medicare or Medicaid coverage. Senator Barbara Mikulski presented the first grant installment and highlighted the program as a life saving measure for families.
