The Frederick Post Office on East Patrick Street has switched to a $1989 gas furnace after a county health department notice of violation over visible emissions. Postmaster John Young says the stoker-fired coal system caused the smokey plume and the new 1 million BTU, 1,000-gallon bottled gas setup is 80 percent more efficient. No timing yet for broader rebuilding. a move to Bowers Lumber had been planned for renovations.

St Johns High Faces June Loss of Teaching Sisters
St Johns High School on Jefferson Street extension will discuss at 8 p m Wednesday the withdrawal of teaching sisters from the school. Sister Ruth Marie of the Notre Dame order says alternatives are being considered and the Provincial Team governs the teaching personnel. The day school serves 153 students on 32 acres with five Notre Dame sisters and about 10 lay teachers.

New Project Officer For Detrick Will Tour Facilities On Wednesday
Dr. William Payne of the National Institute of Environmental Health Science Research in Triangle Park North Carolina has been chosen as the National Cancer Institute senior project officer for the cancer research center at Fort Detrick. He will visit the facility Wednesday to meet Detrick staff and tour the site. Payne will supervise NCI activities on the cancer research program carried out by a private contractor selected from multiple bidders. Progress reports will be submitted every four months to NCI. Payne will handle administrative decisions while some scientific detail is addressed. Decision making will involve the contractor, Dr. Frank J. Rauscher Jr, and the ideology program management group. Payne holds degrees from the University of Virginia Michigan and Pittsburgh and began as a Montgomery County engineer in 1935. In 1943 he became a Public Health Service sanitary engineer before joining NCI in 1948.
