Artificial lung device trial in Utah girl ends in death
An intravascular oxygenator called IVOX was implanted in a 16 year old Texas girl at LDS Hospital Salt Lake City. The patient died days later but researchers remain encouraged and plan multi center trials involving up to 10 patients over a year. The device aims to provide partial gas exchange and buy time for healing, using hollow fibers coated with silicone in a vein near the heart.
