Yeh Backs Off From Claims
Chinese Foreign Minister George Yeh retreated from hints of a U S pledge to defend Quemoy and the Matsus. He said the United States would decide if off shore islands are essential to Formosa defense, and he did not intend to imply a firm commitment. Senator Morse urged truthfulness and warned of trouble in the East if Yeh’s remarks were false.

Shift In Makeup Of Soviet Supreme Court
Moscow radio reported a restructuring of the Soviet Supreme Court with six judges removed and seven new appointees. The changes followed leadership shifts in Moscow, including Bulganin becoming premier, and included V. V. Borisoglebsky, who helped condemn former minister Victor Abakumov in a high profile case. Observers note no clear link to the government shakeup, while specialists suggest the Abakumov trial may reflect moves against Malenkov.
