Evolution of the locket from mourning to picture jewelry
The first lockets emerged in the 17th century as concealed spaces in padlocks to hold hair, often worn as mourning jewelry. Queen Victoria popularized picture lockets by wearing a bracelet with Prince Albert’s photo, inspiring broader use for daughters in law and broader fashion trends. Modern locket styles now range from Victorians to contemporary pieces in gold, filled, and sterling metals, marketed as romantic gifts.
