The Gov Thomas Johnson Middle School will be built on 25 acres at North Market Street and Schifferstadt Drive using a house plan with two 150 student grades per house. The 12.8 million project aims to keep students in self contained areas and ease transitions from elementary to middle school.
Frederick County Narcotics Task Force says two main suppliers, including Victor J Bowman, 32, are jailed. Bowman allegedly supplied 40 to 50 kilos of cocaine to Frederick last year and claimed it as his sole delivery site. Nearly two kilos, worth about 400000, were seized after a five month probe led by state troopers with sheriffs units and INS. Bowman reportedly traveled from Baltimore County to New York to buy cocaine. a kilo was found in his Toyota Camry trunk.
Frederick city aldermen informally supported banning smoking in the seats at Harry Grove Stadium home of the Frederick Keys with uncertainty over extending the ban to the restaurant area. Keys general manager Joseph Preseren cited fan concerns and noted enforcement should be easy as smokers often self-regulate. Debate included Aldermen Hall and Young on restaurant restrictions while Kuzemchak anticipated compliance elsewhere. Additionally, two letters expressing support for Habitat for Humanity and the South End Coalition grants were approved.
Germantown woman Alba Ingrid Scarpelli, 32, was sentenced Wednesday to 18 months in the Montgomery County Detention Center for abusing her boyfriend's 5-year-old son, a punishment critics called disbelief triggering. A psychologist portrayed her as a rape survivor with a brutal upbringing, noting her own childhood abuse. Continued on Page A-5.
Frederick County imposes a virtual moratorium on new towers while the Planning Commission directs a countywide report on tower needs. The move blocks any new tower requests until the study is completed after a Dobson Cellular proposal for a 100-foot tower near Old Gettysburg is reviewed. Commission member Robert White backs action as a general policy.
A Brunswick man, 57 year old Michael James Handren of Orndorff Court, died at the scene when his car veered off Petersville Road and struck a parked tractor-trailer. Police said witnesses described the vehicle’s speed as at or below a posted limit.
Hundreds of Maryland farmers gathered near the State House to protest Gov. Glendening's mandatory nutrient-management plan aimed at reducing nitrogen and phosphorus runoff into the Chesapeake Bay. The House committee heard from more than 50 speakers on three bills, with Delegate Ronald Guns pushing for voluntary plans reaching 50 percent of farmland by 2000 and 80 percent by 2005.
