Guaranteed Wage Drive Hits Rail Sectors Across Industry
The Railway Employes Department of the AFL, representing 350000 shop workers, seeks an annual wage guarantee to offset drastic fluctuations in railroad employment. AFL President Meany urges realism, citing Seaboard Air Line's 95-year stability model while noting building trades may require weekly guarantees. The plan would shift payroll risk to employers and, likely, to consumers.
