Welfare Board May Enter Suit Over Welfare Salaries
Baltimore February 9 court action may be started if conferences fail to resolve the fight over paying welfare workers in Washington County. The state welfare director said a gap of 1100 to 1200 dollars exists between funds provided by the county and the state standards act requirements. Patterson noted that the act fixes minimum and maximum pay and provides one fifth of the difference annually for each worker.

Washington reports 6,000,000 to 12,000,000 fewer passenger car tires available for civilians this year. Previously 30,000,000 tires were considered the essential annual minimum. Rubber director Dewey says the situation is tight but not disastrous and expects no further tightening for about six months. He cites increased pre invasion demand from the armed forces as a major cause of the shortage of synthetic rubber and cotton cord.
