Birth Halfway Point To Readiness For Life
An Associated Press piece surveys human development from birth onward, noting a shift toward viewing birth as a half-way stage. It cites a Population Reference Bureau finding that about 95 of 100 Western babies reach adulthood and discusses Montagu's view that infancy emerges ready to develop outside the womb. It also reports NIH plans to study blood from 75,000 pregnant women across 15 centers over ten years, examining links to brain disorders.

Manana and Castro at Punta del Este survey
U S Senator John Marshall Butler argues the OAS meeting at Punta del Este hurt Castro more than helped. Cuba was expelled while 14 of 21 nations voted yes, six abstained for political reasons including unrest in Brazil Mexico and Chile and a preference for compromise. He notes Dean Rusk gained prestige and warns that Latin America’s manana mindset delays decisive action against Castro.
