Democrats Divided Over Kennedy Gold Aid Plan

Washington AP Democrats and Republicans praised Kennedy’s gold message but some Democrats urged deeper cuts in foreign aid and greater burden on wealthy allies. Senator Byrd called for reduced foreign economic aid and for nations like Germany, Japan, Britain, and France to shoulder more responsibility. Senator Robertson said further overseas spending curbs could shave about $1 billion from aid without harming aims. Fulbright and Humphrey urged stronger action, with Humphrey noting excessive private U.S. funds flow to Western Europe and suggesting tax law reviews. The debate split along committee lines as Kennedy’s plan faced mixed support.
