New city officials tackle carryover issues of conflict

County, delegation undecided on landfill condemnation issue

Frederick County Commissioners met with the General Assembly delegation to discuss a bill limiting condemnation power for a new landfill. The group reviewed attempts to acquire 230 acres of the Schroder farm adjacent to the current site. Grand jury decries cut contact with jail and Montevue home

Frederick County grand jury lamented severed communications with inmates at the detention center and with residents at Montevue Home. The one page report, issued after a jail tour, notes overcrowding with about 200 inmates and 50 percent over capacity, floors used for sleeping, and a bad odor in the kitchen. The panel also urged advance notice for inmate tours and a spokesman for inmates. An indictment was returned, details undisclosed.

Frederick County budget favors growth over class size cuts

Frederick County officials seek at least 118 million dollars for the 1990-91 budget, with only three new elementary staff positions aimed at reducing class sizes. The proposal adds 48 new posts, mainly teachers, funded by about an 18 million dollar property tax raise, and plans to open Ballenger Creek Middle School in September.

MontCo landfill narrowed to three locations

ROCKVILLE The Montgomery County landfill search was narrowed to Barnesville Boyds and Poolesville sites with Poolesville and Boyds seen as top choices. County Executive Sidney Kramer urged one site for detailed study and recommended 1.3 million dollars for engineering design and options. State approval required.
