Bay Ferry Workers Seek Higher Pay Ahead of Bridge
ANNAPOLIS Feb 5 A spokesman for Chesapeake Bay ferry workers urged the Legislature to provide more dismissal pay to avert a mass evacuation before the new bay bridge is completed. Edward L Vogelman chair of an 11 member committee said current rates from 1951 are inadequate and three bills were prepared. One would raise pay when the ferry system’s 300 employees lose their jobs after project completion another would give priority on state job eligibility lists and the third would authorize length of service pensions without the current 30 years and age 60 requirements.

Ferry workers seek better inducements as bridge nears
The Roads Commission plans to abandon old bay ferries when the bridge opens next summer and may establish a new line. Inducements for veterans in the employe retirement system appeared insufficient to retain workers through construction. Gov. McKeldin signed a 1951 act for dismissal pay, costing about 185000, versus 300000 for the proposed plan. A federal grand jury indicted two Baltimore bet manufacturers and a Washington accountant for tax evasion.
