U S Moves To Help Detroit
The government moved to channel defense orders into distressed areas like Detroit where civilian goods cutsbacks create widespread unemployment. A seven member surplus manpower committee will decide how contracts may be steered to surplus labor areas and what price differentials might apply, drawing from 23 designated regions. Congress voiced concern that negotiated contracts could divert work from their districts, with North Carolina lawmakers seeking a Wilson briefing via Rodolfo Correa. Unemployment rose by 400,000 in January, with total unemployment around 2.054 million and employment at 930.726 million.
