Maryland dairy coops urge restraint on new milk hormone use
Two Maryland dairy cooperatives that supply most local milk urged farmers not to use bovine somatotropin. Despite FDA AMA NIH safety pronouncements, public concern and customer calls led the Middle Atlantic Division of Dairymen Inc and the Maryland Virginia Milk Producers’ Cooperative to advise against use. They cited social questions, cost and management demands, noting only a small share of U.S. farmers may try the hormone and that monitoring its presence is difficult.
