Freezing rain and snow left a one inch ice coating, forcing county public and private schools to close. By midmorning conditions improved. the snow emergency was lifted with warming temperatures, and roads crews worked to clear slush and re spread salt and cinders.
Fire calls logged in a 24 hour period ending 10 am include a 6:41 am pole fire behind the school with Lewistown responders. Ambulance and police activity noted with 6 emergency and 2 routine ambulance calls and jail population listing 34 men and 3 women.
The Associated Press reports a winter storm lashed the eastern U S with wind rain snow and ice after deadly tornadoes struck the South Eight fatalities occurred in Alabama and Mississippi with seven dead in Grenada Mississippi and one death plus twelve injuries in Bear Creek Alabama Severe storms produced downed power lines heavy snow drifts and flash flood warnings across several states including Illinois Indiana and Alabama Casualties included six children among the Grenada victims.

A U S Command spokesman said no American helicopters carried South Vietnamese troops into Laos.
The Board of Education and the Frederick County Teachers Association named representatives to an arbitration panel to resolve the impasse in negotiating a master contract for 1971 72. Jerry Lee Hart will represent the board and Robert G. Dexter will represent the teachers.
