Mahoney Gift Sparks Garrett County Politics Debate
In Annapolis on February 4, George P. Mahoney’s delivery of potatoes and flour to Garrett County needy drew political backlash. Governor McKeldin asked Welfare Director Waxter to report while Republican delegates contested the severity of unemployment. Sen. Friend argued reported conditions were exaggerated for political gain, noting many outwork farmers with food on hand and no hunger. Mahoney denied partisan intent, noting county commissioners accepted the aid. Oakland received the 200 fifty pound potatoes and 60 ten pound flour bags. Waxter planned field visits and had previously sought a $10,000 emergency Garrett County appropriation.

Dr Dean discussed selecting the best atomic approach to electricity from fission and noted the Oak Ridge plant consumes rival energy to New York City boroughs in plutonium production. He warned that making atomic energy into affordable electricity is costly and observed nations like England and Spain using more energy than their coal or resources can provide. The talk, presented by Dr Andrew G. Truxal at Hood College, drew a large audience in Brodbeck Hall.
