USDA seeks cuts to wealthy farmers
The 1993 budget proposal from the Bush administration aims to limit farm subsidies to high earners while expanding low income meal access. It trims USDA spending to 59.37 billion, cuts farm loan programs and rural housing, shifts funding to school lunches, food stamps, and WIC, and projects substantial savings by 1994 amid farm sector debate.

Donna Wiles elected to National Grange leadership
Donna Wiles was elected lady assistant steward, becoming the first Marylander in almost 20 years to hold a national Grange office. The Mount Airy resident joined in 1970 and has served as state secretary. Her husband Maurice Wiles, Maryland State Grange Master, hoped for the chaplain post but she won after three ballots. The event was part of the National Grange session in Burlington, Vermont, which features a noncampaign, secret-ballot process. Maryland Grangers performed well as Maurice placed second in a talent contest, and Emmitsburg and Thurmont participants earned ribbons in various categories.
