Maryland to begin annual real estate assessments this year

The Maryland House gave tentative approval to a bill to start annual real estate assessments in July 1956, instead of awaiting the three year cycle. The measure, backed by officials, aims to unlock revenue for next fiscal year by accelerating assessment. Del. Robinson projected Baltimore City could gain about 4.5 million in new revenue if suspended assessments take effect next July. Ward noted maps will be prepared to streamline the process, with full equity as a goal though the mapping won’t finish until fall 1956. In addition, two fishing bills were introduced, including a ban on rockfish in Chesapeake Bay during January and February, drawing support from several delegations.

Oakland groups and Maryland Legion posts said unemployment relief needs in Garrett and Allegany counties are being assessed with welfare workers this week. George P. Mahoney distributed large quantities of potatoes flour and meal, unloading 12000 pounds of meal and delivering 15000 pounds of potatoes and 6000 pounds of flour with 30000 more potatoes to Cumberland slated for tomorrow. Officials stressed reports of widespread hunger were exaggerated while aid would reach about 250 families in Oakland and around 1000 families across both counties. A 4 year old Brunswick boy was seriously injured when his sled hit a curb near his home and he was hospitalized with internal abdominal injuries.

Extension of draft law approved by House committee

Washington notes the House Armed Services Committee approved an extension of the draft law for four years after June 38. The bill would tap about 674,000 men aged 18 to 26 for two years of service with six years in the reserve, and two draft system amendments were approved to exempt early National Guard entrants and those who serve long enough in the armed forces from further induction except in war. Annapolis reports Gov McKeldin agreed to postpone motor vehicle fee increases for one year, supporting road funding while noting federal aid and maintenance needs. Local civic plans include a sausage and pancake dinner to raise funds for a YMCA pool filtration system, with service clubs aiding.
