Commissioners Seek Limits on Special Deputy Powers
Frederick County officials pressed Annapolis lawmakers for at least five bills including curbs on the sheriffs power to appoint special uniformed deputies and repeal of last years school bond enabling legislation. They propose adding 4.5 million in school funds to general county building financing and maintaining authority to sell bonds as needed for courthouse library planning. Sheriff Richard Baumgartner suggested deputies retain arrest powers at events. Derr noted the county may use bonds partially or wholly as needed.

Bartonsville Man Dies In U S 40 Crash
A 54 year old Bartonsville man John Edgar Shaffer was killed in a single car crash on U S 40 east of Md 355 around 6 15 p m. He may have died of a heart attack before injuries. His car was destroyed and he was pronounced dead at Frederick Memorial Hospital. In a separate county case Emmitsburg police arrested 20 year old David Daniel Mort for possession of mafia and jailed him.

Boy Charged In Stolen Check Case
A 15 year old boy was arrested for attempting to cash a stolen Social Services check and for participating in cashing another stolen check. The checks were mailed to Frederick residents by Social Services. He fled a store when questioned after trying to cash a 127 dollar check. He was later caught at Carmack's Grocery and charged in the 117 dollar case. He was turned over to juvenile authorities.
