Zoning changes near Frederick City face final board vote
Final action on proposed zoning west of Frederick City is due February 16 after a public hearing. The plan from the planning commission, based on a land use study by Julian Tarrant, would reclassify land in the one mile belt between U.S. 40 and Interstate 70 from R-1 holding to a mix of limited business along U S 40, high density apartments behind, and predominantly single family areas. Attorney Samuel W. Barrick objected to limited business along old U S 340 near the freeway, urging residential zoning to bar undesirable businesses, but the board declined to delay the broader changes and the city attorney noted the mechanics of delaying.

Plans For High Dam At Seneca Scrapped
A new Potomac Valley Park plan backed by President Johnson would remove the need for a large Seneca dam. Interior Secretary Udall said the plan envisions acquiring river lands from Washington to Cumberland to create a vast park and preserve the Potomac landscape. The proposal opposes the Army Corps of Engineers plan to build a high dam at Seneca that would flood thousands of acres along the Potomac. The plan requires government purchase of about 190 miles of river shore and extensive easements on already developed land, with Loudoun County particularly outspoken over land acquisitions tied to a proposed water supply and flushing system. Previously, a three year dispute ended in 1966 when cabins at Seneca were torn down to make a public picnic site.
