Magellan Brings France Gift Train To New York Harbor
The French Line freighter Magellan arrived in New York with 49 boxcars totaling 250 tons of gifts from 6.9 million French families as thanks for the 1947 Friendship Train. The cargo includes dolls, Houdon busts, and clothing, intended for display in schools and museums nationwide. The voyage received elaborate salutes as it neared Weehawken port, while officials note the cargo will be distributed to Washington DC, Hawaii, and states as permanent public property.
