Gets Term and Fine for Tax Evasion in Baltimore

Howard W. Geary a Baltimore florist was sentenced to one year in prison and fined $15,000 by Federal Judge W. Calvin Chesnut for evading payment of $26,810 for 1946 to 1949. His attorney noted lack of understanding of bookkeeping and math. A related case against Geary’s wife was dropped. Also reported: Basil Dr. Wells, Severna Park painting contractor, convicted of attempted evasion of $13,526.36 and sentenced to nine months in prison with $5,000 fine. Dividends paid on listed NYSE common stocks rose to a record $5.87 billion in 1952, up 3.6 percent, with gains in electrical equipment, aircraft, and utilities and declines in U.S. firms abroad, textiles, and farm machinery.

December Industrial Production Declines

In Washington and Maryland reports on December output show production indexes dipping. The Federal Reserve notes a 7 percent drop from peak July 1953, with January expected to dip further. industrial activity trails prior highs while the 1947 39 base shows December at 27 percent above that origin.

Memorial Mass for Lt Edward Flanagan at Mount St Marys

Memorial Mass held at Mount St Marys College on February 8 marks the first anniversary of Lt Edward Flanagan U.S.M.C. who died in Korea. Flanagan, a 1951 Mount St Marys alumnus, was a standout athlete in basketball and football and a memorial medal honors a student for scholarship conduct and sportsmanship.
