Maryland agriculture year features beef checkoff growth and royal titles
The 1987 Maryland agriculture year highlights the Beef Industry Council boosting beef consumption at its annual meeting. Susan Dykes of Princess Anne is named Maryland Angus Queen, Dawn Acres Farm is breeder of the year, and the Schmidt family receives the top Maryland Pulled Hereford Association award. Anne Whitlock is crowned a princess, with other local honors and new directors at dairy and milk producer groups. A major anti growth hormone stance emerges at the Maryland-Virginia Milk Producers meeting, while the Maryland Guernsey Association protests fair contest changes. The Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival draws 30,000 visitors and crowns Susan Morris queen, and other awards recognize educators, 4-H and FFA youth, and Granger of the Year.
