Walking distances to be lengthened for Baltimore school children
A Maryland Board of Education report urged lengthening walking distances from homes to schools to cut bus costs. The plan would raise junior high walking radius by a half mile, saving about $785,000 yearly, and suggest staggered start times to save $300,000. It also proposes computerized bus routing with a near $2 million upfront cost, later saving about $1.2 million annually. The panel emphasizes pupil safety and calls for better bus program financing and safer walking conditions near new schools.
