Budget 30 Million Needed For 1955 Maryland Taxes

Baltimore dec 28 financial experts confirmed for Gov McKeldin that 30 million dollars in new or higher taxes are needed to balance the nest budget. The Board of Revenue Estimates forecast 99 million next year while the governor says 129 million is required. Tax collections aren’t expected to drop much, but extra revenue from this year cannot be repeated. McKeldin tapped 5 million from gross receipts taxes and left over 3 million from last year, leaving only 37,224 unspent by June 30. The group says this will be the smallest surplus since the early years. They anticipate less money from alcohol and horse racing next year and discuss higher rates on sales, income, auto titling, and possibly a cigarette tax. Real estate taxes at about 11 cents per 100 will stay to repay capital bond money.

Frederick County Tax Rate Held At 1.40 For 1955

The Frederick County Commissioners set the 1955 real and personal property tax rate at 1.40 per 100, maintaining the rate despite requests for increases. They cut several departmental requests, approved a $150 bonus for senior teachers, and raised starting salaries for county teachers to 3200 with top pay at 5600. Budget changes aim to align pay with other counties while warning that 1956 may require higher rates due to building needs and program costs.
