In Middletown Maryland Dan Poole a 1 year old seed farmer questions the states plan to vastly increase land preservation. He asks what purpose preservation serves if it is not economically feasible for younger farmers. The piece notes farmers want to protect land but must profit to sustain it.
Maryland's farm count and acreage have fallen drastically since 1900 with 13,037 farms covering 223000 acres in 1992, now urging new strategies from on farm processing to milk support. Pennsylvania congressman E G Bud Shuster drew about 2,000 from three Frederick County contractors after a October 25 City Club fundraiser. He then toured the area by helicopter to review interstate traffic, while several local officials declined to attend the fund raiser as inappropriate during his county visit. Shuster leads the House panel on transportation funding for 1 70.
Twenty six Freder ick County Public Schools bus operators face contract terminations June 30 after an IRS audit found the drivers appeared to be employees rather than independent contractors. The A list contractors own their buses and maintenance, while 16 B list firms will continue to operate about 50 routes.
The Fraternal Order of Police drops businessman Galen Clagett from the labor relations panel and designates Kim Lewis, president of the Frederick County Teachers Association, as his replacement. City officials rejected Clagett over a claimed conflict of interest. Officers dispute the city’s stance and press to move forward amid long pending grievances and unresolved panel appointments.
Maryland State Police report a fatal crash on US 15 near Motters Station Road in Emmitsburg. Cathy-Jo Moser, driving a 1989 Aries, was westbound on US 18 when struck by Martin Peter Donow of Herndon Virginia in a 198 Mercury Cougar. Moser was ejected and flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore.
