Suspected Cop Killer Surrenders in Baltimore
A 24 year-old laborer surrendered at police headquarters with his mother after being sought in the fatal shooting of a police sergeant and the wounding of a lieutenant during a Christmas Eve liquor-store robbery. Authorities also pursued brothers Samuel J. Veney and Earl Veney, charged in a warrant with robbery and wounding Lt. Joseph Maskell. Sergeant Jack Lee Cooper was found shot dead near his squad car. Lt. Maskell, injured in the same incident, was in fair condition and improving. Police questioned friends and relatives of the Venev brothers as the search continued across Baltimore. The report ends with a stray note about the bird phrase “silly as a coot.”
