Man Held In Death Of Child Near Ijamsville

A three year old girl, Marcia Rene Smith, died after what investigators say was fatally beating. Her stepfather Charles Lester Jackson, 35, is charged with manslaughter and held on 2500 dollars bond. Autopsy began at Baltimore City Morgue with full report pending. The death occurred at the Jackson home on Big Woods Road near Hyattsville area. The body rests at Hicks Funeral Home with graveside services planned at St John’s Cemetery in Frederick Monday at 9 a.m.

Student Stabbed At School Dance

A 16 year old Walkersville area boy was cut in the side with a knife by another juvenile after a fight outside a teenage dance at Walkersville Elementary. Arthur A. Leveronne of Dublin Road, Walkersville High School student, received a small flesh wound on the left side and was treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital. The incident occurred around 11 45 p m and the assailant had not been picked up as authorities await Leveronne s parents to pursue a warrant.

ATLANTA AP postal workers seek the sender of eight raccoon skins mailed in an unclaimed parcel. Under postal rules the post office must hold such parcels, here in a gunny sack, for a period but the skins had not cured and carried a strong odor.

Frederick Retail Boom Seen as Consumer Spending Rises

A Special to the News reports Frederick's retail activity for the year ending June 30 1963 reached 52 692 000 up from 50 959 000 with per capita spending or household capacity at 7 145. New car sales and big-ticket items led the rise as residents regained confidence and residents and non residents shopped locally amid rising incomes and steady prices. Local merchants anticipate a strong 1964 with expected auto growth industrial expansion and government outlays.

Four Injured In Morning US 15 Head-On Crash

Four people were injured when two cars collided on US 15 near Motter Avenue exit at 1 a.m. Rose mary J. Beckley 13 of Thurmont and George T. Ambush 37 of Urbana were hospitalized with serious injuries. Gene Allen Stull 30 of Woodbridge and Susan C. Keller 18 of Thurmont had minor injuries. Ambush was driving the 1962 Mercury. Stull drove the 1963 Buick convertible. Charges pending.

Stronghold Inc adds 74 acres to its park near Urban a on Sugarloaf Mountain at Frederick, buying 30 wooded acres from William White and 44 acres from James Ruppert for about 28 000. Holiday Mail Increases at Frederick Post Office

Frederick Post Office reports a 7.1 percent overall rise in mail from December 1 to Christmas Eve, driven by parcel post growth of 48.2 percent. Total pieces reached 3,621,003, while machine cancellations fell 4.7 percent and 999,885 to 953,151 letters were processed this season. Parcel post totals jumped to 63,514 from 42,867 last year as many sent packages instead of greeting cards. About 7,000 letters could not be delivered due to insufficient or illegible addresses and undeliverable third class mail awaits destruction.
