Frederick Apple Month showcased county schools cooking
Frederick County schools celebrated National Apple Month with home economics classes teaching apple varieties storage and cooking. The Apple Fling contest involved about 1,000 students across Rock Creek Center, Thurmont Middle, Middletown Middle, Thomas Johnson Middle, Monocacy Middle, Catoctin High, Brunswick High, Thomas Johnson High, Frederick High, and an adult class at TJ High. Organizers included the Frederick County Board of Education, the Maryland Apple Commission, and the Extension Service. Winners from Thurmont Middle and Catoctin High highlighted a wide array of recipes such as Apple Walnut Brownies and Knobby Apple Cake, with plans to publish top entries and recipe booklets.
