Bell ringing and Christmas aid drive by Salvation Army volunteers
Volunteers ring bells in local shop areas as the Salvation Army continues its 130-140 year tradition. Jenkins notes kettle totals vary daily and with weather, averaging 55 to 60 dollars, peaking 700 to 900 when civic clubs participate. Christmas aid serves families with children based on income and expenses, delivering baskets on Christmas Eve to prevent early consumption, while the Army assists nursing homes and jailed residents in Frederick County and beyond.

Downtown Frederick sees extra Christmas Eve help from Beth Sholom volunteers
Frederick police for the holiday shift welcomed about 40 Beth Sholom Congregation volunteers assisting patrols and precincts. Project coordinator Sanford Blum notes the tenth year of the program. Volunteers report many incidents involved drugs or alcohol and believe the ride along gives officers talking partners and a deterrent effect. Blum attributes hardship from economic strains to increased drunkenness and fewer gifts. The ride along aims to boost cooperation and deter violence as Christmas marks winter’s start.
