Page recounts Grant promotion to General in 19th century Capitol rush
Frederick County native William Tyler Page, a National House clerk, celebrates forty-one years at the Capitol and recalls a celebrated “football rush” to enroll a bill restoring Ulysses S. Grant to the retired list with the rank of general. The scene unfolds as Tama Jim Wilson withdraws from a contested seat, granting the Grant bill, while Page and aide Isaac Bassett rush to complete the enrollment before adjournment. Also notes future royal animal imports to the United States, with an estimated value of $600,000 for wildlife from Africa, India, and Europe to stock zoos and circuses.
