Sailors bid farewell after ferry disaster near Haifa
Divers abandoned the search for the last of 21 men drowned when a ferry carrying Saratoga ship crewmen capsized off Haifa. Aviation Ordnanceman Anthony J. Fleming of Buffalo was identified among the missing. Ferries were suspended after a propeller problem. many crew planned to spend Christmas ashore. Survivors and onlookers mourned as Capt. Mobley spoke of the tragedy and a 21-gun salute was fired.
