Local B 17 gunner finally earns Flying Cross in Georgia ceremony
Harry Zimmerman Jr a B 17 gunner from Braddock Heights Frederick County was finally awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for Mission 18 over Hamburg Germany on New Year’s Eve 1944. His crew survived despite severe damage and he had earlier helped save co pilot Lt Edward Burnham by securing a torn cable and re securing a lift. The medal was presented at a Marietta Georgia VFW ceremony beside former crewmates Lt Melvin Scott and Lt Burnham. Zimmerman's postwar life includes work at Lockheed Martin and 30 years in Georgia before retirement.

Frederick County commissioners postponed deciding whether to keep all 12 county directors until June to align the change with the new fiscal year. They also approved a four day retreat to begin forming a county strategic plan led by Jo Anne Ellison at $100 an hour, despite opposition and without a formal bid. The chamber backs a long term, public private approach to the plan and proposals are due in January.

County to Offer Free Tire Drop at Landfill in Amesty Day
Frederick County commissioners approved a Tire Amnesty Day agreement with Maryland Environmental Service to reimburse the county for disposing of up to 75 tons of tires and cover $1,500 in advertising. The state previously reimbursed $7,300 last year. Also, funds were allocated from a local law enforcement block grant for upgrades to polygraph equipment, courthouse security, and narcotics task force surveillance. Whitman Reynardt & Associates will design water and sewer fines for Meadows, Balmoral, Pinehurst and Nightingale in Lake Linganore, with a bid dispute noted by two commissioners.

City and County to share 800 MHz radio system
Frederick County and the city approve a shared use 800 megahertz public safety radio network and define each party’s responsibilities for implementation. Navy recruit Saron Sieg, son of Diane Lee, graduated from Penn Cambria High School in 1999 and completed Navy boot camp at Great Lakes.
