City to get HUD grant for shelter in Frederick
Frederick will receive 376 362 from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development to fund the city's Transitional Shelter over three years. President Clinton announced the nationwide 850 million in grants to aid more than 330 000 homeless Americans with housing job training child care mental health services and substance abuse treatment. HUD says 200 million will support 1 240 long term programs to end homelessness through the Continuum of Care approach. Michael Spurrier Frederick's community action agency director runs the program and says the shelter aims to transform lives of vulnerable people.

Area gets first snow of season in Frederick region
Snow began Wednesday afternoon and intensified through evening, leaving over half an inch in Frederick and about an inch across most of the county. State crews salted and plowed as roads remained slick. A Brunswick mechanic was severely burned repairing a salt spreader, treated at a Baltimore trauma center. The county lifted its snow emergency plan at 9 am today.
