Senate Passes Excess Profits Tax Measure
The Senate approved a $3.3006 billion excess profits tax on corporations by voice vote, aiming to curb profiteering and fund defense. The plan retroactively applies 77 percent on excess profits from 1946-49 averages, raises normal rates, caps total tax at 62 percent of profits, and offers provisions to shield small and troubled industries with an alternate capital-based method. Termination is set for July 1, 1953 unless Congress renews it.
