The jury acquitted Chara Adler, 18, of killing her infant after she admitted the child died by benzine asphyxiation. Spectators observed as jurors reportedly gave $100 to the defendant, who was set free. The judge approved the verdict amid dispute over the circumstances.
The International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers, based in Chicago for 100 days, approves a new wage scale for about 1000 iron workers. The scale sets 25 to 43 cents per hour by locality, raising some districts and equalizing others. Employers will be asked to sign, and strikes will follow if refused.
